Bloomsday Portland 2019
Celebrate Father's Day with the Mother of all books.
Sunday, June 16th at 3 PM, at the Maine Irish Heritage Center
“The most infamously obscene book in ancient or modern literature.” Sunday Express “Our first impression is that of sheer disgust.” Daily Express “I don’t envy anyone who has to read it for pleasure.” The Sporting Times
These were some of the first reviews of Ulysses, a book that would nonetheless come to be regarded as one of the greatest novels ever written in the English language.
To mark Bloomsday - June 16, the day on which the book is set - AIRE Theater proudly presents Ulysses for Beginners. This rollicking performance piece, written by AIRE Artistic Director Tony Reilly, uses scenes, songs, and lots of humor to explain the story line of Ulysses in just one hour.
Tony Reilly returns as the guide to the intricacies of Joyce’s masterpiece -- with a touch a wit and a bit of irreverence. Join an all-star cast, featuring Paul Haley, Harlan Baker, Maureen and David Butler, Thomas Campbell and Tara McCannell, on Sunday, June 16, at 3 p.m. at the Maine Irish Heritage Center on the corner of State and Gray Streets in Portland. Festive and period attire encouraged. Free and open to the public. Cash bar.
